Plumbing Mistakes (or What Not to Do)
Everyone makes mistakes. However, when you make err with plumbing it can end up costing you a lot in the end. To help you avoid some of these common plumbing mistakes, S.O.S Plumbing compiled a list of some of the more common snafus.
Plumbing Mistake Number One
Chemical drain cleaners are a big no-no. Chemical companies try hard to sell you on these, but they can be disastrous on your plumbing and the entire sewage system. Regular use of these will net you some corroded and leaky pipes. Instead try a plumbing auger or natural products like baking soda and vinegar.
Mistake Number Two
Leaving the water running can be a disaster if you’re going to do any kind of maintenance on your plumbing. Always find the valve that goes to your appliance or pipes and turn it off. If you can’t find that one, then turn off the main house shutoff valve.
Mistake Number Three
Whatever you do, don’t make major changes to plumbing without the proper permits. You may end up devaluing your home and causing multiple headaches and delays when trying to sell it. If you’re trying to install a bathroom or even just repipe, check and see if a permit is needed.
Mistake Number Four
Another mistake is connecting galvanized pipes to copper pipes. When these two touch each other corrosion follows. If you use a dielectric union, a special joint that with a plastic sleeve and rubber washers that prevents the copper and galvanized pipes from touching, then you should be ok.
Mistake Number Five
Doing extensive DIY without a license or insurance can become disastrous. The occasional minor repair is no big deal, but anything extensive is going to require a base of knowledge that the average citizen just doesn’t have. Doing something wrong could absolutely wreak havoc on your home.
